Did you know that Eildon wasn’t always where it is today? The town’s story is intertwined with the creation of Lake Eildon. This wasn’t some natural wonder. It was a human creation a massive reservoir.

Eildon District sits nestled near Lake Eildon in central Victoria. Its history is deeply rooted in the construction of the Sugarloaf Reservoir. This reservoir flooded the original town of Darlingford. The inhabitants had to relocate. The reservoir’s construction started in 1915. It was completed in 1929.

But even the Sugarloaf Reservoir wasn’t big enough. In the 1950s the Eildon Dam was built. It greatly increased the lake’s size. This project brought thousands of workers to the area. They needed homes. Eildon District sprang up to house them. Imagine a boom town built almost overnight. Three hundred houses were prefabricated in England. They were shipped to Australia and assembled onsite.

The houses are still standing in Eildon today. Many of them still display their unique architectural styles. They are a testament to that era. Eildon’s story isn’t just about a dam. It’s about people. It’s about a community built amidst a massive engineering project.

Lake Eildon is also incredibly popular for fishing. Species like Murray Cod Golden Perch and Redfin are common. There’s even a fish hatchery the Snobs Creek Fish Hatchery. It restocks the lake annually with hundreds of thousands of fish.

Today Eildon District offers a tranquil setting. It contrasts with the bustling construction activity of its past. You can explore walking trails enjoy water sports or simply relax by the lake. Eildon a small town with a very big story. A story of resilience adaptation and the enduring human spirit.
