How about a little escape to a park with a surprising past? We are standing in Edison Park. It is more than just a green space. Edison Park is a place where history and community intertwine.

Edison Park, located in the community of the same name, became part of the Chicago Park District in 1936. But its story starts much earlier. The park’s fieldhouse, a beautiful example of Arts and Crafts architecture, was built in 1907. Solon Spencer Beman designed it. It wasn’t always a recreation center. The fieldhouse originally served as a public school.

Imagine children learning within these walls over a century ago. This building has been a hub for knowledge and community. From 1937 to 1960, a branch of the Chicago Public Library operated here. People came to explore new worlds through books. The fieldhouse wasn’t just a school or library. It was a community center. It hosted countless events and gatherings.

Take a look around Edison Park. Notice the hawthorn trees. These trees were planted in the 1930s. They are a living reminder of the park’s development. A historic flagpole stands tall. It is a silent witness to the passage of time.

Over there, you will see a boulder. This boulder is a tribute to Thomas Edison. It was dedicated in 1979. This honors the man for whom the community is named. In 1890, the area was renamed Edison Park with Thomas Edison’s blessing.

Edison Park also has a playground. The playground was added in 1988. Children’s laughter and joyful screams fill the air. The park provides a space for play and recreation.

Edison Park has a rich history. The area has changed from Native American summer camps to a farming community. The community then turned into a railroad suburb and finally a Chicago neighborhood. German farmers settled here in the 1830s. Among them were the Ebinger family. They regularly encountered Native Americans along what is now Milwaukee Avenue.

The arrival of the railroad in the 1850s spurred development. In 1896, the area organized as a village. Residents boasted of artesian water, a fire company, a hotel, and large houses. Edison Park competed with nearby Park Ridge and Norwood Park.

One issue faced by early residents was the distance to a high school. To allow their children to attend Carl Schurz High School, the residents annexed to Chicago in 1910.

Edison Park has a vibrant present. The park offers various programs. Arts and crafts, ballet, cartooning, and ceramics are taught here. There are activities for all ages. Seniors can join the Senior Citizens Club.

Edison Park stands as a testament to community spirit. It is a place where the past is honored. The future is embraced. The park received recognition on September 21, 2007. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

As you leave Edison Park, remember its layered story. It is a story of education, community, and transformation. It is a reminder that even small parks can hold great significance.
