What secrets does a forest hold when it whispers stories of princes and pheasants? Here in Kassel, nestled on the slopes of the Eichberg, a spur of the Kaufunger Wald, sprawls the enchanting Eichwald. Eichwald is more than just trees. It’s a tapestry woven with threads of history, stretching back to a time when Landgrave William VIII, in 1740, envisioned a majestic oak alley. This alley, still visible today, stands as a testament to his grand design. He also established a pheasantry, transforming Eichwald into a playground for the elite. Imagine the rustle of silk gowns and the chatter of courtiers as they strolled beneath the oaks. The pheasantry thrived until 1830, its grounds echoing with the calls of exotic birds. The air, thick with the scent of oak and earth, held the promise of a royal hunt.

The Eichwald transitioned from a hunting ground to a haven for the people of Bettenhausen. It became their recreational escape, a place to reconnect with nature’s embrace. But the echoes of the past still linger. Before it became a public park, a high wooden fence encircled Eichwald. This fence wasn’t just a boundary. It was a guardian, protecting the precious pheasants and black grouse within. Built into the fence were marten traps, silent sentinels against predators. In autumn, the forest echoed with the sounds of horns, signaling the start of the annual hunt. Pheasants, released from their enclosures the night before, would seek refuge in the undergrowth. Then, driven out by beaters, they met their fate at the hands of aristocratic hunters.

The grand wooden fence met its end during the inflationary period, dismantled piece by piece, its wood repurposed as fuel. With its disappearance, Eichwald opened its arms to all, becoming a shared space for the community. The pheasantry, once the heart of aristocratic amusement, became a simple animal park in 1830. Local wildlife replaced the exotic pheasants, marking a shift towards a more natural environment. The last pheasant master, Conrad Graf, left Eichwald in 1830 for Wilhelmshöhe, taking a piece of the forest’s history with him. Even after their keepers departed, pheasants continued to breed in Eichwald until 1901, their presence a ghostly reminder of the forest’s past.

The old forester’s lodge, once home to pheasant masters and foresters, met a fiery end in 1876. In its place rose a new building, destined to become the Eichwald restaurant, a place of gathering and celebration for the local community. The original pheasant keepers’ quarters, a modest, elongated building east of the forester’s lodge, survived untouched until after World War I, when it was converted into three residential units. Even the pheasant stall itself endured, standing proudly until at least the late 1920s. The story of Eichwald is not just one of royalty and leisure. It’s also a story of resilience and community.
