In 1568, a cornerstone was laid just east of Dresden’s bustling center. This marked the beginning of the Ostravorwerk. It wasn’t a palace or a cathedral, but something far more vital: a fortified farm. The Ostravorwerk served a crucial dual purpose. It supplied provisions to the Dresden court. It also bolstered the city’s defenses. This seemingly simple farm played a vital role in Dresden’s history. The area where the ehem. Ostravorwerk stood was originally known as “Ostra”. The name “Ostravorwerk” itself speaks to its function – “Vorwerk” denoting a fortified outer farm. By 1835, “Ostra” had been renamed Friedrichstadt and incorporated into Dresden. The ehem. Ostravorwerk may be gone now, but its legacy remains, woven into the fabric of Friedrichstadt. Its story offers a glimpse into a time when even a farm could be a strategic asset, essential for both sustenance and security.
