Ten thousand workers. That’s a staggering number. A number that once pulsed through the heart of the Ehem Mitteldeutsche Motorenwerke. Right here where we stand today. Imagine this sprawling complex. This wasn’t just a factory. It was a microcosm of wartime Germany.

The Ehem Mitteldeutsche Motorenwerke or MiMo as it was known. This vast facility once hummed with activity. It produced Junkers aircraft engines under license. Engines that powered the planes of the Luftwaffe. MiMo was the third largest Auto Union plant. It was only surpassed by Horch in Zwickau and Wanderer near Chemnitz. The factory employed a massive workforce. This included many forced laborers.

Construction began in 1935. The initial location was in Zwickau. It proved too close to the Czechoslovakian border. Leipzig offered a more strategic location. The chosen site was a forested area. It straddled the border of Leipzig-Portitz and Taucha. The land itself was repurposed. What was once forest and farmland transformed into a hub of industrial might. By 1939 the entire operation had relocated to Taucha. The name changed to Mitteldeutsche Motorenwerke GmbH Taucha.

The factory produced a variety of Junkers engines. These included the Jumo 205 Jumo 211 and the Jumo 213. They even contributed parts for the Jumo 004 jet engine. Production soared. It went from 73 engines in 1936 to a remarkable 5327 in 1939. The workforce peaked in 1942. It reached an astounding 9339 employees.

The MiMo wasn’t immune to the ravages of war. Allied air raids caused significant damage. Approximately 60% of the factory was destroyed. This was during raids in 1944. The estimated damage cost was a hefty 58240315 Reichsmarks.

After the war the factory tried to adapt. It shifted to peacetime production. This included making household goods and repairing machinery. But its past as a crucial arms manufacturer sealed its fate. The Soviet military administration oversaw its dismantling starting in 1946. Most of the factory buildings were demolished. Only the administration building and a flight school building remained. The company was officially dissolved in 1948.

Today little remains. The vast complex is now largely a ruin. Parts are used for storage. Others are utilized for paintball or by a shooting club. Yet even in its decay the Ehem Mitteldeutsche Motorenwerke stands as a poignant reminder. It reminds us of the scale of industrial production during WWII. It serves as a silent testament to a lost chapter of Leipzig’s history. A chapter interwoven with both technological innovation and the darker aspects of the era.
