“Amiche” whispers the wind through the trees. Do you hear it? This isn’t just any path. This is the former Bahnstrecke Bodenheim-Alzey. A relic of a bygone era. Its story unfolds before us.

The Bahnstrecke Bodenheim-Alzey also known as “Amiche” played a vital role in the life of Rheinhessen. It wasn’t just a railway line. It was a lifeline. Connecting villages and transporting goods for almost a century. This 30.9 kilometer track linked Bodenheim to Alzey. It weaved through the heart of Rheinhessen’s vineyards and fields. For many years it was the main artery for transporting agricultural products. Imagine the chugging of steam engines. The rhythmic clatter of wheels on tracks. The busy railway stations bustling with people.

Construction began in two phases. The first section from Bodenheim to Undenheim opened in 1879. The second leg from Undenheim to Alzey followed in 1896. Initially five train pairs ran daily in each direction. Later this included connections to Mainz. The journey wasn’t always smooth. The hilly terrain of Rheinhessen presented challenges. The line experienced its share of accidents. One even involved runaway goods wagons in 1896.

The “Amiche” wasn’t just a name. Legend holds it stemmed from a woman named Annemarie. She was known for her kindness and willingness to act as a personal courier for her neighbours. Picking up goods from Alzey. Bringing them back to those who needed them. She earned the nickname “Amiche” friend in French. Whether the story is true is debatable. Some believe the name comes from the French word “ami” meaning friend or a locomotive driver named Armin. Whatever the origin the name became synonymous with the railway line itself.

Passenger services ended in 1985. Freight transport continued until 1995. Slowly but surely the railway was dismantled. Parts of its route were even transformed into a bike path. The Amiche Radweg follows much of the historic track. A fitting tribute to the line’s legacy. Today six of the former stations’ buildings stand as cultural heritage monuments. Silent witnesses to the line’s past. Remnants of the unique architecture of the time.

The Bahnstrecke Bodenheim-Alzey its story is one of progress. It’s a reminder of a time when railway travel was not just a mode of transport but a social event. Stand here on this path. Feel the weight of history. The whispers of “Amiche” still echo. Let its story guide your way.
