Crumbling brick whispers secrets. Before you stand the ruins of a former brick factory in Százhalombatta. This isn’t just any old factory. This is where generations toiled. This is where families found livelihoods. This is where history is etched in brick and mortar.

The factory wasn’t always ruins. It once thrived. It produced bricks for a growing Budapest. A 12-chamber kiln fired the bricks. A 35-meter chimney carried smoke to the sky. Then came World War I. A flood engulfed the valley. The kilns exploded.

Production restarted in 1924. Modern machinery replaced the old. A grand 16-chamber Hoffman kiln rose. A sprawling brick storage area was built. The new chimney stood tall a towering 65 meters. This is what you see today the partly built storage area.

A factory owner from Székesfehérvár took over in 1942. It became Lázár János Tetőcserép és Gőzteglafgyár. Around 200 workers toiled here. Entire families worked and lived nearby. Workers’ housing baths and a cultural center were built. Imagine a whole community centered around brickmaking.

Nationalization in 1950 marked a change. Post-1956 steam engines gave way to electric ones. The Budai Téglaipari Vállalat was formed in 1963. The nearby Danube port and oil refinery lessened the factory’s importance. Casual workers filled gaps. Production stopped in 1990. Workers transferred to a brick factory in Törökbálint.

The factory’s fate was sealed. By 2008 the auxiliary buildings and the dangerous chimney were demolished. A retaining wall strengthened the hillside. A gateway remains near the former chimney. The upper level is inaccessible. A network of pipes runs through the ruins. Only the concrete crown remains largely intact. Access to the upper level is possible. The remains are thickly covered in moss.

These ruins are more than just bricks and mortar. They are a testament to hard work community and the passage of time. They are a quiet reminder of a life now past. They speak of a community bound by the very bricks they made. This is the legacy of the Egykori téglagyár romjai. Let’s move on to our next destination.
