Egmont Studentergård was established in 1964. The Egmont H. Petersens Fond provided crucial support for its construction. C.F. Møllers Tegnestue designed the original building. Its architecture reflects the functionalist style popular in the 1960s.
In 2012-2013 Egmont Studentergård underwent significant renovations. Arkitektfirmaet Frost Larsen from Skanderborg oversaw the project. A new floor was added expanding the residence’s capacity. This addition provided space for 42 new rooms each with a small kitchenette. However these kitchenettes lack a refrigerator oven and stovetop.
The architectural changes sparked debate. The addition of a new floor altered the original design’s harmony. Some felt the modern extension clashed with the building’s existing aesthetic. Despite the aesthetic concerns the expansion addressed a pressing need. It provided more housing for students in Aarhus.
Egmont Studentergård now houses 146 students. Each resident has a 12 m2 room with a private bathroom and a 6 m2 entryway with built-in closets. This totals 18 m2 of personal space. The rooms all have internet and TV connections.
Residents share communal kitchens. Each kitchen is used by 17-18 students and equipped with a television. Egmont Studentergård fosters a sense of community.
