In 1828, a dream began to take shape in the heart of Batignolles. The cornerstone was laid for Église Sainte-Marie-des-Batignolles. The architect, Jacques Molinos, envisioned a sanctuary that would serve the growing community. Just two years later, as the commune of Batignolles-Monceau emerged, the church officially adopted its present name, Église Sainte-Marie-des-Batignolles. The area flourished, and so did the need for a larger space. In stepped Paul-Eugène Lequeux, another architect who expanded the Église Sainte-Marie-des-Batignolles. He added the two side aisles, the transept, and the choir, transforming the structure into a Latin cross by 1851. The design, inspired by ancient Roman basilicas, speaks to a timeless elegance. Église Sainte-Marie-des-Batignolles stands as a testament to neoclassical architecture. Its facades, devoid of ornate embellishments, exude a simple grandeur. The entrance, graced by a peristyle reminiscent of Greek architecture, features four Doric columns. Above them, a frise of metopes and triglyphs supports a triangular pediment. The interior of Église Sainte-Marie-des-Batignolles is strikingly minimalist, save for the painted coffered vault and the choir area. This church holds a unique distinction among Parisian churches. It is one of the few without a bell tower, a silent sentinel amidst the bustling city.
