Église Sainte-Foy stands as a testament to time. Its history stretches back to the 11th and 12th centuries. Originally, the church faced east-west. A clocher-porche, a bell tower porch, marked its entrance.
Over the centuries, Église Sainte-Foy underwent significant changes. By the 19th century, it was deemed too small. This led to a major reconstruction. Controversies arose. A partial collapse occurred in 1841. Finally, in 1843, the rebuilt church was consecrated. It now faced north-south. The church adopted a basilical style. This included three naves. Three semi-circular apses were added. A large cupola and rounded arches completed the design.
The clocher-porche remained from the original church. It once featured nine sculpted panels. Six of these depicted signs of the zodiac. Today, you can view them at the Musée Gadagne.
Église Sainte-Foy is dedicated to Sainte Foy. She was a young martyr. She was tortured and killed in Agen in 303. Residents requested relics of Sainte Foy to honor her. These relics were placed in a beautiful bust-reliquary.
In 1840, Église Sainte-Foy became too cramped. Expansion occurred around the original bell tower. The orientation shifted to north-south. Rebuilding followed a vault collapse. Consecration took place in 1843. Later works further transformed the building. Weather gradually weakened the walls and foundations.
Église Sainte-Foy became city property in 1905. This followed the separation of church and state laws. A 2013 assessment prompted restoration work. From 2018 to 2020, the exterior saw renovations. Facades and stained glass were restored. Accessibility for those with reduced mobility improved. A second phase of restoration began after a 2023 review. It is scheduled to finish in December 2025.
A public fundraising campaign supported the work. The Fondation du Patrimoine led this. The association La Fontanière assisted. In July 2022, the church achieved historical monument status. This brought grants, technical support and prestige.
