Imagine being in the hull of an upturned ship. That is the feeling that Sainte-Bernadette Chapel evokes. Welcome to this unique house of worship in Paris’s 16th arrondissement.

Sainte-Bernadette Chapel is not just another church. It is a testament to architectural innovation and devotion. Its story begins with a vision to honor Saint Bernadette Soubirous. She is known for the Marian apparitions at Lourdes.

The chapel’s construction started in 1936. It concluded in 1937. Paul Hulot was the architect behind this design. He chose a unique blend of materials. Burgundy brick forms the facade. A cement frame provides support.

As you approach Sainte-Bernadette Chapel prepare to descend. An architect named Raymond Busse added a facade-bell tower in 1953. This addition aligned the chapel with the surrounding buildings on Rue d’Auteuil.

Stepping inside Sainte-Bernadette Chapel you will notice the nave. Its design resembles an upturned ship’s hull. The walls are bright white. Ocre bricks accentuate the central arcades.

The apse features a stunning mosaic. It depicts Our Lady of Lourdes appearing to Bernadette Soubirous. Mauméjean created this artwork. Electric lights illuminate the Virgin’s halo.

The stained glass windows add to the chapel’s beauty. Mauméjean also crafted these. They consist of colored glass cabochons and glass slabs. An economical technique developed in 1929 made this possible. The technique was popular in the 1930s.

Look for the large stained glass window created by Jacques Le Chevallier in 1952. It represents the Assumption of Mary. Latin litanies surround her. Blue is the predominant color.

Sainte-Bernadette Chapel is part of the Notre-Dame-d’Auteuil parish. It is near the main church. The chapel serves a diverse community. The Portuguese and Philippine Catholic communities are very active here.

Take a moment to appreciate the chapel’s serene atmosphere. It is a place of peace and reflection. Its unique design and beautiful artwork create a memorable experience. Sainte-Bernadette Chapel stands as a symbol of faith. It represents architectural creativity in the heart of Paris.
