Beneath those towering spires lies a story etched in stone and faith. We are standing before the Église Saint-Vincent-de-Paul. Many locals simply call it l’Église des Réformés.

This magnificent church stands proudly at the top of the Canebière. It’s a testament to Marseille’s rich history and architectural ambition. The Église Saint-Vincent-de-Paul is more than just a place of worship. It is a landmark.

In fact, its story begins long before its official dedication in 1886. The site was once home to a chapel of the Augustins Réformés. That earlier chapel was destroyed but its name stuck.

Look at the neo-gothic facade. François Reybaud designed it in the 13th-century gothic style. Later, Joseph Pougnet took over. Construction faced many challenges. Funds ran low and work was slow. The parishioners raised three million francs to complete it.

The Église Saint-Vincent-de-Paul’s two spires rise 76 meters high. The interior stretches 61 meters long and 28 meters wide at the transept. The height of the vault is more than 23 meters.

Notice the main facade with its three portals. The sculptures planned by Abbé Pougnet were never completed. However, a small model of the ornate facade can be seen in a side chapel. It marks Curé Vidal’s tomb.

The oak doors feature bronze panels by Caras-Latour. The stained-glass windows are the work of Édouard Didron. They fill the church with color and light.

Inside, the high altar is from the workshops of Jules Cantini. A grand organ resides within these walls. Joseph Merklin built it and it features neo-gothic design.

The Église Saint-Vincent-de-Paul almost faced demolition in the 1980s due to low attendance. But it has since experienced a revival.

In 2015, the Église Saint-Vincent-de-Paul was listed as a historical monument. This ensured its preservation for future generations.

From 2019 to 2023, the city of Marseille undertook a vast restoration. This included the steeples, exterior walls, and the nave. Sculptures and ornaments were returned to their rightful places.

Today, the Église Saint-Vincent-de-Paul stands as a symbol of Marseille’s enduring spirit. It is a place of faith, history, and architectural grandeur. Its towering presence reminds us of the power of community. It also highlights the importance of preserving our cultural heritage. Take a moment to appreciate its beauty and the stories it holds.
