How about stepping back in time to 1625? That is when the Église Saint-Sébastien in Allauch was built. But its story begins even earlier. Let’s explore this beautiful church.

The Église Saint-Sébastien replaced a chapel from 1511. This earlier chapel honored Saint Sébastien. People prayed to him during times of plague. They hoped he would protect them. The church became a parish around 1568. Before that, it served the Lords. These Lords were also canons.

Look at the dome. It has eight sides. This octagonal dome dates back to 1625. Notice the bell tower. It features glazed tiles. These tiles are in the style of Burgundy. That style is rare in this region. The bell tower was built in 1685.

The campanile is also interesting. The town acquired it in 1765. Jean-Baptiste Oddo crafted it. He was a master locksmith from Marseille. People consider it one of the region’s most beautiful. The facade dates to the 18th century.

The Église Saint-Sébastien was renovated from 1862. It reached its final appearance in 1867. The portal and bell tower are historic monuments. They were registered in 1983.

Inside the Église Saint-Sébastien, there is much to see. Admire the organ. Beaucourt built it between 1850 and 1860. He was an organ maker. Also, note the triptych from 1713. Barthélémy Chasse signed it.

The Aubanel couple gifted a large ex-voto painting in 1868. Monticelli created it. The painting is in memory of their daughter. She passed away.

Don’t miss the stained-glass window. It shows the first astronaut on the moon. That is quite a sight. Pascal Barlier created eleven stained glass windows in 1969. One represents the first steps on the moon. They happened on July 21, 1969.

The master altar is marble. It is in the Baroque style. It was constructed in 1754. Several altars are classified as historic monuments.

Saint Sébastien has protected this town. From the old chapel to today. The Église Saint-Sébastien stands as a symbol of faith. It also stands as a work of art.
