Ever stopped to consider how city planning intertwines with faith? The story of Église Saint-Pothin is such a tale.

Welcome to Église Saint-Pothin. This Roman Catholic church stands proudly in Lyon’s 6th arrondissement. It is a testament to neoclassical architecture. Église Saint-Pothin is more than just a beautiful building. It is a symbol of Lyon’s urban development in the late 18th century.

Jean-Antoine Morand designed the Les Brotteaux district. Église Saint-Pothin became a key part of his plan. A chapel opened in 1818. However locals wanted a real church. They sought a branch of La Guillotière under St. Pothin’s patronage. The royal ordinance of June 21, 1826 made it happen. Parish boundaries were set in 1827.

But construction wasn’t without drama. In 1831 Canuts smashed the doors of the old church. Then in 1835 the Hospices Civils de Lyon donated land. A contest was held. Christophe Crépet won. He was a Lyon architect. He proposed a neoclassical design. Construction began in June 1841. It finished in 1843. The initial budget was tripled. This led to compromises. Decorations were cut back and cheaper materials were used. Despite these issues the church opened on Christmas Day 1843.

Église Saint-Pothin resembles a Greek temple. Its facade features a Doric portico. A triangular pediment tops it. Many Doric columns support the structure. Above the six columns is a frieze and a triangular pediment. A cross adorns the very top.

Restoration became necessary. Tony Desjardins oversaw work in 1867. Claudius Porte directed campaigns in 1874 and 1876-1877.

Inside, the church is beautiful. Étienne Couvert created the dome fresco in 1893-1894. It depicts the Virgin and the twelve apostles. Lucien Bégule made a glass art piece. It represents the Holy Spirit as a dove. Émile Bégule, Lucien’s son, created the stained glass windows. They show Lyon’s and France’s church founders. St Irenaeus, St Polycarp, St Blandina, and St Pothinus represent Lyon. St Genevieve and St Clotilde represent France.

Look for the 1656 painting of St. Paul. It once resided in Notre-Dame de Paris. The organ sits in the apse. Aisles line the nave. Adrien Rougier served as the organist from 1945 to 1984.

The church’s history continues to evolve. The organ of Saint-Pothin played a vital role in Lyon’s musical life. This was especially true after the Second World War.

Église Saint-Pothin stands as a testament to faith. It also exemplifies urban planning and architectural resilience. Its neoclassical style is distinct. The art inside tells stories of saints. Take a moment to appreciate the blend of history and artistry that defines this Lyon church.
