Gazing up at the Église Saint-Pierre du Gros Caillou, imagine the echoes of history swirling around its neoclassical facade. This isn’t the first Saint-Pierre to grace this spot. A much older chapel, dedicated to Saint Peter, was erected in 1738. Parishioners affectionately called it “Notre-Dame de Bonne Délivrance,” a name tied to the trials of childbirth. The neighborhood grew with the construction of Les Invalides and the École Militaire. By 1763, a new church replaced the chapel, but time and revolution weren’t kind. The building we see today, the Église Saint-Pierre du Gros Caillou, began its life in 1822 under King Louis XVIII. Architect Étienne-Hippolyte Godde drew inspiration from Roman basilicas, a style popular since the late Ancien Régime. The church was completed in 1826. Later additions include a side aisle in 1905 and the Chapelle de la Vierge in 1971. Inside the Église Saint-Pierre du Gros Caillou, a sense of elegant simplicity prevails. Look for the painting by Jean-Baptiste Pierre, depicting Saint Francis of Assisi in prayer. Also, note the landscape paintings by Alexandre Desgoffe, though sadly, they are not in the best condition. The Chapelle de la Vierge holds a unique treasure: a Stations of the Cross crafted from intertwined branches and twigs by Ludwika Ogorzelec in 1953. The Église Saint-Pierre du Gros Caillou also holds a somber piece of revolutionary history. On July 17, 1791, following Louis XVI’s flight to Varennes and his subsequent return, tensions in Paris were high. The National Assembly’s decision to reinstate the king sparked outrage among Parisian radicals. A protest at the Champ de Mars ended in bloodshed. The Gros-Caillou district witnessed the brutal repression of fleeing protesters. While the exact number of casualties remains uncertain, this event stained the neighborhood with a tragic chapter of the French Revolution. The Église Saint-Pierre du Gros Caillou, therefore, stands not only as a testament to architectural beauty but also as a silent witness to the tumultuous history that unfolded around it.
