Have you ever felt the weight of history pressing down? Here at the Église Saint-Nicolas-de-Myre you can. This isn’t just any church. It’s the oldest Eastern church in all of Marseille and in all of France.

The Église Saint-Nicolas-de-Myre stands as a silent testament to centuries of faith and immigration. Imagine the waves of Eastern immigrants who found solace within these walls since its opening in 1822. This place saw their hopes and their sorrows. It saw their celebrations and their quiet prayers.

The building itself is unique. Its architecture with its special layout and ornate Eastern decor is unlike any other. It’s the first church of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church. The Divine Liturgy a Byzantine rite service is held here in both Arabic and French. A true blend of cultures.

The story of the Église Saint-Nicolas-de-Myre begins with an order from Louis XVIII. Archbishop Maximos III Mazloum had a vision. He sought to provide refuge for Eastern refugees fleeing Egypt and Syria after the tumultuous events of 1801 and the Ottoman persecutions of 1817. This church was the answer. It was more than just a building; it was a beacon of hope.

The church wasn’t just a haven for those seeking spiritual comfort. It was a symbol of resilience. In 1921 for its centennial anniversary the church was beautifully adorned. New stained-glass windows from Pomez were installed. A stunning wrought-iron gate featuring fleurs-de-lis was added. The craftsmanship is exquisite. Louis Trichard’s workshop was behind this work. The same workshop created the monumental gate of Parc Chanot.

Even today the Église Saint-Nicolas-de-Myre stands strong. In 2013 a restoration project began. The focus was on waterproofing protecting the frescoes and preserving the Pomez stained glass. The work is a testament to its enduring legacy.

This isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a living museum. It holds within its walls the stories of generations. The intricate iconostasis its three registers and the rare liturgical calendar reliquary are works of art. Created by the master cabinetmaker Girgi Bitar of Damascus they represent exceptional craftsmanship. The church was also declared a historical monument in 2016. A well-deserved honor for a place so rich in history. The Église Saint-Nicolas-de-Myre a place of quiet contemplation and a powerful symbol of hope. A place that has endured and continues to inspire.
