Has anyone ever told you about the time Étienne, the baker, mistook the chime of the Saint-Michel bells for his oven timer? He pulled out a batch of beautifully browned… rocks. He’d been so distracted by the new stained glass at Église Saint-Michel, gleaming in the morning sun, that he’d completely forgotten his bread. Right here, before you, stands Église Saint-Michel, a phoenix from the ashes, a testament to resilience. Église Saint-Michel wasn’t always this modern marvel. The original Saint-Michel, built in 1913 by Bertrand Bonnamour, fell victim to the bombings of World War II in 1944. Imagine the heartbreak of the parishioners, seeing their beloved church reduced to rubble. But from that devastation, a new vision arose. In 1961, architect Marc Rinuccini began constructing the church we see today. It was consecrated in 1962, a symbol of hope and rebirth for the community. Step inside and let your eyes be drawn upwards. The stained glass, created by René-Maria Burlet, tells a story. The choir windows depict the signs of the zodiac, a celestial dance of light and color. The baptistery window features a vibrant firebird, symbolizing renewal and the Holy Spirit. And on the reverse of the facade, a magnificent Saint Michael stands guard. But the artistry doesn’t stop there. Burlet also adorned the walls flanking the choir with depictions of two pivotal biblical events: the Wedding at Cana and the Last Supper. These murals, in their rich detail and vibrant hues, bring these stories to life within the very heart of Église Saint-Michel. So, the next time you hear the bells of Église Saint-Michel, remember Étienne the baker and his burnt rocks. Remember the church that rose from the ashes. And remember the celestial stories told in glass and paint, whispering to all who enter.
