Marvel at the Église Saint-Marcel its history unfolds before you. This church stands in the heart of Marseille’s oldest district Saint-Marcel. It retains a village-like charm. Notice its unique square bell tower topped with a delicate wrought-iron Provençal campanile.

The Église Saint-Marcel’s interior holds a fascinating secret. It houses the private chapel of the Forbin family. This chapel lies to the right of the main altar. The Forbins were a family of tanners sailors shipowners and merchants. King René ennobled them. Their tombs lie beneath the chapel floor. They were lowered into the crypt through a slab to the left of the carpet.

Among the Forbins buried here rests the renowned navigator Claude de Forbin 1656-1733. He accompanied the Chevalier de Chaumont on his embassy to Siam. In 1685 he was named Grand Admiral and General of the Armies of Siam. Returning to France in 1688 he became one of King Louis XIV’s most important naval figures. The Église Saint-Marcel thus connects us to a significant chapter in Marseille’s maritime history.

The Église Saint-Marcel’s construction finished in 1752. However its consecration didn’t occur until 1836. This delay adds another intriguing layer to its story. The church itself is a testament to the enduring spirit of Saint-Marcel. It has witnessed centuries of changes in the district. It remains a focal point for the community.

The Église Saint-Marcel is more than just a place of worship. It’s a living archive. It quietly preserves the stories of generations past. It’s a place of reflection. It stands as a symbol of Saint-Marcel’s rich heritage. Spend some time absorbing its atmosphere. Allow the history to wash over you. The Église Saint-Marcel awaits your exploration.
