Église Saint-Luc

“A church built of glass and aluminum?” you might ask, raising an eyebrow. Indeed, right here before you stands Église Saint-Luc, a testament to modern architectural ingenuity. Église Saint-Luc isn’t your typical Parisian church. It doesn’t boast centuries-old stone and stained glass. Instead, it rises from the heart of the 19th arrondissement, a beacon of contemporary design. Constructed between 1997 and 1998, Église Saint-Luc occupies the site of former dilapidated housing. Architects Montel and Basset, faced with limited ground space, cleverly designed the church to reach for the sky. The church was consecrated in June 1999 by Cardinal Jean-Marie Lustiger, who was also involved in the project’s conception. Élise Saint-Luc is more than just a building. It’s a symbol. Its four prominent facade columns represent the Gospels, serving as a symbolic call to faith. The overall structure, a landmark in the urban landscape, embodies a return to the city’s spiritual core. Inside, the nave is a wellspring of light and space. Its ornamentation is strikingly simple, allowing the architecture itself to speak. The altar, ambo, and tabernacle, crafted from cast aluminum by designer Bernard Malaquis, echo this minimalist aesthetic. They offer clean lines and uncomplicated forms. Outside, the tall white cross to the left unequivocally marks Église Saint-Luc as a place of worship. From certain angles, if it weren’t for the glinting glass and light pouring through, one might mistake Église Saint-Luc for a modern cinema. Inside, the nave inclines towards the choir, bringing the first pews close to the altar, in line with the precepts of the Second Vatican Council. Two light sources, one lateral and the other zenithal, illuminate the choir. The unique stained glass, formed from stacked layers of glass, displays shifting colors depending on your perspective. A bronze Virgin and Child, sculpted by Laurence Leplay in 2002, graces the interior. This is the church’s sole ornamentation. The crucifix in the choir adheres to the style of 17th-century German schools. On the back of the entrance doors, Malaquis incorporated an excerpt from the Magnificat, the Virgin Mary’s song of thanksgiving, taken from the Gospel of Luke. On the front, he added motifs reminiscent of landscapes. Église Saint-Luc offers a unique experience.
