Perhaps you noticed the absence of soaring Gothic spires? Instead, u00c9glise Saint-Loup presents a more grounded presence. Its history is rich even if its Parisian story is less grand than other churches.

Saint-Paul-Saint-Louis Church adopted the baroque style. It stands as a testament to architectural shifts in Paris. Constructed between 1627 and 1641, it marked a departure from the prevalent Gothic style. It embraced the baroque aesthetic.

Originally a Jesuit church, its fate changed when the Jesuit order faced banishment in 1762. Clergymen from the neighborhood then took over its care. The French Revolution brought upheaval. Like many religious monuments, u00c9glise Saint-Loup became a storehouse. Its treasures suffered destruction and theft.

The 19th century saw architect Victor Baltard spearhead restoration efforts. Many architectural elements we see today are thanks to him. Baltard renovated the external facade and the central gate. During the 2012 works, cracked and damaged stones from the facade were replaced.

The dome of Saint-Paul-Saint-Louis Church served as a light well. It was one of the first and largest in Paris at the time. It even inspired future constructions such as the Invalides and Val-de-Gru00e2ce.

Inside, ornamentations, sculptures, and paintings once adorned the space. Sadly a significant portion was lost during the Revolution. However, the altar, organ, and pulpit remain to showcase its heritage. Eugu00e8ne Delacroix created one painting.

u00c9glise Saint-Loup held significant religious importance. Cardinal Richelieu himself celebrated the opening mass. Illustrious preachers delivered sermons within its walls.

Its location near Place des Vosges attracted many personalities. Victor Hugo’s daughter Leopoldine even celebrated her wedding here in 1843.

Consider the resilience of u00c9glise Saint-Loup. It has been a place of worship. It has been a storehouse. It has been a site of artistic creation. It stands as a reminder of Parisian history. The story includes revolution, restoration, and enduring faith.
