Gazing upon Église Saint-Lazare, one might wonder about the stories held within its weathered stones. Église Saint-Lazare stands as a testament to faith and resilience in Marseille’s 3rd arrondissement. Its name, Saint-Lazare, harkens back to a 12th-century leprosarium once located nearby. The Knights of Saint-Lazare, also known as Lazarists, cared for the lepers within its walls. This act of compassion echoes in the very foundation of Église Saint-Lazare. The leprosarium transitioned into a mental asylum in 1699, eventually moving to La Timone hospital in 1844. The church itself arose from a bold move by Bishop de Mazenod. He defied the laws of the time, which required municipal approval for religious buildings, and began construction in 1833. This audacious act almost halted the project. However, shifting political tides and the king’s new religious policy ultimately saved Église Saint-Lazare. The city council, recognizing the building’s public benefit, officially acquired it for 168,000 francs. This was a fraction of the total cost, which reached 453,833 francs and required a loan guaranteed by Bishop de Mazenod himself. Completed in 1838, Église Saint-Lazare showcases the architectural vision of Pascal Coste and Barral. The church’s basilica plan boasts a grand scale: 45 meters long and 23 meters wide. Inside, rows of Ionic columns divide the three naves. Look up to admire the coffered ceilings. These are reminiscent of the Renaissance style, a clear influence on Coste’s work. What truly sets Église Saint-Lazare apart is its unique collection of paintings adorning the side aisles. Step inside and wander through the church. Notice the artistry within the choir. Three paintings by Jean-Joseph Dassy depict scenes from the life of Saint Lazarus: his resurrection, his ministry, and his martyrdom. Continue along the right aisle. You’ll encounter works by artists like Cantérini, Gagliardini, and Auguste Nancy. Their paintings depict biblical stories such as the Adulterous Woman, the Samaritan Woman at the Well, and the Return of the Prodigal Son. The left aisle features yet more artistic treasures. Here you’ll find works by Mariotti, Magaud, and Bronzet, illustrating scenes like the Baptism of the Queen of Candace’s eunuch, Jesus in the house of Bethany, and the Saints of Marseille. Église Saint-Lazare offers a glimpse into the rich tapestry of faith, history, and art that defines Marseille. Its story reminds us of the power of compassion, the complexities of history, and the enduring beauty of artistic expression.
