“A church reborn.” These words echoed in my mind as I first laid eyes on Église Saint-Just. Église Saint-Just isn’t just a beautiful building. It’s a testament to resilience. A phoenix rising from the ashes. Let’s delve into the captivating story of Église Saint-Just in Lyon. The original Basilica of Saint Justus, where Pope Clement V was crowned in 1305, met a tragic end in 1562. Huguenot captain François de Beaumont, in a fit of religious zeal, ordered its destruction. The canons, devastated but determined, decided to rebuild. They chose a new location within the city walls, a mere 200 meters from the original site. Construction of Église Saint-Just began in 1565. The canons, eager to reclaim their spiritual home, aimed to celebrate Mass by Christmas of that year. This initial burst of activity, however, couldn’t be sustained. Financial difficulties plagued the project, stretching the construction over decades. Finally, in 1591, Archbishop Épinac consecrated the newly built Église Saint-Just. The church’s journey wasn’t without further trials. The French Revolution brought more turmoil. The chapter was abolished in 1791, and the church suffered significant damage. Yet, like a persistent vine, Église Saint-Just clung to life. It was restored in 1830, finding new purpose as part of the Parish of Saint-Just-Saint-Irénée. Today, Église Saint-Just stands as a symbol of perseverance. Its neoclassical facade, designed by Ferdinand-Sigismond Delamonce in the early 18th century, bears an inscription: “Machabaeis primo deinde sancto iusto.” This translates to “For the Maccabees first, then St. Just,” a tribute to the original basilica’s dedication. The statues of St. Irenaeus and St. Justus, sculpted by Jean-François Legendre-Héral in 1828, flank the facade. Inside, the church houses beautiful artwork. A painting of the Annunciation by Hyacinthe Collin de Vermont graces the choir, alongside a Nativity by Hughes Taraval. 19th-century stained-glass windows depict the life of Saint Just and the early days of Christianity in Lyon. Église Saint-Just isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a living chronicle of Lyon’s history, whispering tales of destruction, resilience, and rebirth. Its excellent acoustics make it a haven for sacred music concerts, filling the air with melodies that resonate with the church’s rich past. As you stand before Église Saint-Just, remember its story. It is a reminder that even in the face of adversity, faith and determination can rebuild and create something beautiful.
