High above the bustling streets of Marseille stands the Église Saint-Georges a beacon of modern faith.

This striking church isn’t your typical ancient cathedral. Inaugurated in 1963 it’s a testament to mid-century architecture. Designed by architect Claude Gros it’s a bold statement rising 66 meters into the sky. It was built on the site of a paint factory destroyed in 1944. The previous church dedicated to Saint George was integrated into this new building a fascinating blend of old and new.

Louis Cottin president and founder of La Savoisienne played a key role in the church’s creation. He championed its construction on land that once housed that paint factory. The result is a unique structure labeled as a 20th-century heritage site. A surprise awaits within its walls. A beautiful nativity scene graces the church every Christmas season.

Inside the Église Saint-Georges warm colors abound. The stained glass windows and walls create a vibrant atmosphere. Even the organ reflects this warm palette. The church houses numerous works of art some originating from Saint-Laurent. This collection remains somewhat hidden open only during concerts. Father Michel Lombard once served as the church’s pastor.

Weekdays offer several mass times. Wednesdays at 8:30 am Thursdays at 7:00 am and Tuesdays and Fridays at 6:30 pm. Saturday and Sunday masses are at 6:30 pm and 10:30 am respectively. Masses are also celebrated on the eves of religious and liturgical feasts at 6:00 pm.

The Église Saint-Georges is more than just a place of worship. It is a captivating blend of history architecture and faith. It’s a hidden gem in Marseille a place to explore and appreciate. A testament to the city’s rich past and its exciting future. Take a moment to reflect on its unique story and appreciate its beauty.
