Amidst the vibrant energy of Paris, the Église Saint-François de Molitor stands as a modern marvel. It whispers tales of transformation and renewal. The Église Saint-François de Molitor isn’t just a church. It’s a testament to the evolving spirit of a community. The original structure, a humble Capuchin chapel built in 1941, served as a place of prayer for peace during a turbulent time. The Capuchin friars dedicated it to Saint Francis of Assisi, a symbol of humility and connection with nature. As time marched on, the chapel, initially too small and constructed with subpar materials, faced insurmountable safety issues. By the 1980s, the Capuchins had moved to their Parisian headquarters. The chapel was entrusted to a diocesan priest, marking a transition in its stewardship. In 1996, the community of worshippers, now a thriving parish carved from Notre Dame d’Auteuil and Sainte Jeanne de Chantal, was granted a new beginning. Cardinal Jean-Marie Lustiger initiated the reconstruction of the dilapidated chapel, envisioning a space that better served the needs of the modern parishioner. The Église Saint-François de Molitor, consecrated in 2005, emerged as the latest of seven new churches in Paris. Its design, echoing the principles of Vatican II, emphasized community and accessibility. The church opens directly onto Rue Molitor, its three monumental dark wood doors symbolizing the Holy Trinity. A small bell tower houses four bells: Marie, Claire, Marc, and Pierre. The light Cavalla marble, adorning both the tower and facade, distinguishes the sacred space from its surroundings. A striking statue of a youthful Saint Francis of Assisi, sculpted by Alain Courtaigne from a single block of Galician granite, greets visitors. Inside, the elliptical shape of the sanctuary embraces the congregation, fostering a sense of unity. The altar, ambo, and baptismal font, crafted from Carrara marble, are positioned along the main axis. A golden cross stands before a frosted glass wall, separating the sanctuary from a tranquil garden, a symbolic paradise. The curved walls of the galleries, made of blond Saint-Maximin limestone, extend like open arms. Natural light floods the sanctuary through a large north-facing window and a skylight above the altar. An oratory, accessible through three openings to the right of the sanctuary, houses the tabernacle. The church’s design, a harmonious blend of concrete, limestone, marble, wood, and glass, creates a serene and welcoming atmosphere. The Église Saint-François de Molitor, with its 420 seats, invites all to join in communal prayer and experience the enduring power of faith in the heart of Paris.
