Tucked away on a hillside in Marseille, the Église Saint-Fortuné whispers tales of faith, history, and a touch of irony. The church stands proudly on the plateau of Montolivet. This area, in the 12th arrondissement, overlooks the bustling city below. Its name, Montolivet, itself carries a story. It evolved from “Monteolivetus,” a name referencing the olive groves that once covered these slopes. The Église Saint-Fortuné wasn’t always here. It began as a humble chapel in 1830. This was thanks to a land donation to Jean-François Demoye. The chapel was elevated to parish status in 1862 by Monseigneur Cruice. He dedicated it to Saint-Fortuné. Now, here’s where the story takes a turn. The church’s name honors the patron saint of Bishop Fortuné de Mazenod. He was the first bishop of Marseille after the diocese was re-established in 1823. But the saint isn’t directly connected to Marseille. Saint Fortuné was a 6th-century bishop of Todi, Italy. The residents of Montolivet requested the chapel from Bishop de Mazenod. They later named it after his patron saint in gratitude. The current neo-Gothic structure, built between 1877 and 1879, retained the name. Today, the Église Saint-Fortuné serves a diverse community. Regular masses are held in French. There are also services in Polish for the Polish community in Marseille. If you visit on a special occasion, you might even hear the beautiful sounds of the church organ. The Église Saint-Fortuné is more than just a building. It is a testament to the evolving history of Marseille. It reflects the influence of different communities and the enduring power of faith. It’s a place where the whispers of the past meet the present. A place where the rustling leaves of long-gone olive trees seem to echo the quiet prayers within its walls.
