The imposing flamboyant Gothic bell tower was added by Louis XI. He wanted it in the late 15th century. The tower was erected from 1478 to 1496. Louis XI had a special veneration for Saint Eutrope.

The worst was yet to come state vandalism. In 1803 the pr\u00e9fet decided to demolish the entire nave. He wanted to avoid repairing a pillar. Saintes was deprived of a true Roman jewel. The church became offset. The former chancel became the current nave. The old apse became the present chancel.

The stained-glass windows date from the 19th and 20th centuries. One section recounts the life of Saint Eutrope.

In 2021-2022 the Basilique Saint-Eutrope underwent restoration. It is a major work of the area. UNESCO listed it as a World Heritage Site in 1998. The Basilique Saint-Eutrope now reveals a new facade. The building is adorned with new sculpted modillions. Their theme is the health crisis. This contemporary imprint remains faithful to the monument’s universal identity.
