The warm hues of stained glass beckon you. Welcome to Église Saint-Eugène a hidden gem in Marseille’s Endoume district.

This charming church built in the 19th century sits slightly off the main thoroughfare. It’s nestled amongst a network of smaller streets leading towards the Corniche Kennedy and Vallon des Auffes.

Its warm colors evoke a Provençal style. The vibrant stained glass the walls and even the organ create a beautiful palette. The church is meticulously maintained a testament to its community’s care. Did you know that a plaque nearby commemorates a visit from Leo Tolstoy himself? In 1861 the renowned writer visited local Marseillaise schools. This is a little known fact.

Église Saint-Eugène is part of the Roucas Blanc parish along with Saint-Antoine de Padoue. It’s a fascinating blend of history and local life. The church’s namesake Saint Eugène de Mazenod was a significant figure. He served as the Bishop of Marseille from 1837 to 1861. He founded the Oblates of Mary Immaculate a missionary congregation. He was canonized in 1995.

According to one source a cross once stood before a Brothers’ school. This was on a small hill surrounded by vineyards called Place de la Croix. For reasons unknown it was moved to the church in 1910. It didn’t survive the elements. Another interesting detail.

Masses are held regularly. You can find the schedule posted outside or online.
