Perhaps you have heard of Father Damien. This story is about the \u00c9glise Saint-Damien-de-Veuster. It stands as a testament to a remarkable man. This church commemorates the life and legacy of Saint Damien of Molokai. He was a Belgian priest. He devoted his life to serving people with leprosy.

In 1840 Jozef De Veuster was born. Later, he became Father Damien. He joined the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. This was after helping on his family’s farm. Inspired by his brother’s missionary work, Damien chose his religious name. He honored Saint Damien. Saint Damien was a physician and martyr.

Hawaii faced a public health crisis. Leprosy, or Hansen’s disease, spread. The Hawaiian government established a leper colony on Molokai. This was to quarantine those affected. Father Damien volunteered to serve there.

Arriving in Molokai in 1873, he ministered to 600 lepers. He built a church and established the Parish of Saint Philomena. He aided residents. He dressed ulcers. He constructed homes and furniture. Father Damien even made coffins and dug graves. He improved their living conditions. He taught. He painted houses. He organized farms. Father Damien also oversaw the construction of chapels, roads, and hospitals. He lived as an equal among those with leprosy.

His work gained international attention. King David Kalākaua honored him. He became a Knight Commander of the Royal Order of Kalākaua. Father Damien contracted leprosy himself after eleven years of service. Despite his illness, he continued his work.

In 1889 Father Damien died at age 49. He was buried under the pandanus tree. This was the same tree where he first rested upon arriving in Molokai. His body was later returned to Belgium. His right hand was re-interred on Molokai after his beatification.

Father Damien’s story inspired many. Mahatma Gandhi cited his work. It inspired his social campaigns in India. In 1977 Pope Paul VI declared Father Damien venerable. Pope John Paul II beatified him in 1995. Pope Benedict XVI canonized him in 2009. His feast day is celebrated on May 10.

Two miracles were attributed to Father Damien. These occurred after his death. A religious sister in France was cured in 1895. An Hawaiian woman experienced remission from cancer after praying at his grave.

Today, \u00c9glise Saint-Damien-de-Veuster stands. It symbolizes compassion. It represents selfless service. It reminds us of Father Damien’s unwavering commitment. He gave voice to the voiceless. He brought dignity to the sick. This church serves as a reminder of his legacy. It is a beacon of hope.
