Imagine Paris without its iconic neo-Gothic basilica. That is almost impossible today. But the Église Saint-Claude almost never came to be.
Welcome to the Église Saint-Claude. It is a beacon of neo-Gothic architecture. It stands proudly on Rue Las Cases. This basilica has a rich history. Its construction marked a turning point in Parisian church design.
The story of Église Saint-Claude begins in the mid-19th century. The architect Franz Christian Gau designed it. He was a German-born French architect. He embraced the neo-Gothic style. This was a departure from the prevailing neoclassical architecture.
However Gau’s initial plans faced strong criticism. The council of civil buildings largely decried them. Neo-classical architecture dominated the era. A Gothic-inspired church challenged the authorities. The support of Prefect Rambuteau was crucial. It helped the project gain approval.
Construction started in 1846. Sadly Gau died in 1853. Théodore Ballu continued the work. He was Gau’s former assistant. Ballu completed the church in 1857. He enhanced the exterior with intricate details. Ballu extended the front of the church by several meters. He added the two impressive towers. These gave it the presence of a small cathedral.
Step closer to admire the facade. It showcases the Flamboyant Gothic style. The spires of the two towers reach 70 meters. The facade has three portals in bays. They feature high pointed arches. Sculptural decoration adorns them. Statues depict Saint Clotilde. She was the wife of King Clovis I. Also Saint Valere is depicted. He was the Bishop of Treves. Each played a vital role in the early French Christian church.
Inside Église Saint-Claude, light floods the space. Stained glass windows are high on the walls. The interior stretches 96 meters long and 39 meters wide. Tall classical pillars separate the outer aisles from the nave. These form pointed arches. They branch out into slender colonettes. These reach up to support the ceiling vaults.
Look toward the apse behind the altar. It features five chapels. The Chapel of the Virgin is in the center. Others honor Saint Joseph, Saint Remi and Saint Louis. One is dedicated to the Holy Cross. Red banners with Chinese characters decorate the Chapel of the Holy Cross.
In 1896, Pope Leo XIII declared Église Saint-Claude a minor basilica. This commemorated the conversion of Clovis in 496. The basilica became one of four minor basilicas in Paris.
Église Saint-Claude is also known for its organ. Aristide Cavaillé-Coll built it in 1859. César Franck played it from 1859 to 1890. Franck loved the instrument. His concerts influenced church organ music.
As you leave Église Saint-Claude, remember its journey. It faced architectural opposition. Yet it rose to become a celebrated basilica. Its neo-Gothic design has inspired many. It stands as a testament to faith and artistic vision.
