Hidden within the vibrant tapestry of Marseille’s 14th arrondissement lies the Église Saint-Barthélemy. Can you imagine a time when this bustling neighborhood was a desolate marsh? In the 14th and 15th centuries, this area was uninhabitable. Fast forward to 1620, and a small church was inaugurated here. Sadly, this predecessor to the Église Saint-Barthélemy was destroyed in 1876 to make way for the railway. The church we stand before today, the Église Saint-Barthélemy, received its blessing in October 1862. The bishops of both Marseille and Gap presided over the ceremony. The Église Saint-Barthélemy stands as a testament to the evolving landscape of this area. The 19th and early 20th centuries saw the construction of most of the village surrounding the church. The area experienced rapid urbanization, fueled by industrial activities and the presence of the railway. This growth unfortunately led to the disappearance of many agricultural lands. The church is located on Avenue Claude Monet, a fitting tribute to the Impressionist painters, and perhaps a nod to the Parc des Impressionnistes, a residential development built nearby in the 21st century. The late 20th century brought economic shifts, with the departure of industrial activities leaving behind numerous brownfield sites. The Église Saint-Barthélemy has witnessed the changing fortunes of its surroundings, from a desolate marsh to a bustling village, from industrial prosperity to modern residential developments. The Église Saint-Barthélemy has persevered, a silent observer of Marseille’s ever-changing story.
