Perhaps, as you stand here before the Église Saint-Augustin, you’re wondering about its unique story. This church is not just another religious building. It is a testament to Lyon’s history and architectural innovation.

Église Saint-Augustin stands at the intersection of Rue Denfert Rochereau and Rue Jacquard. It is the newest parish sanctuary in this district. The parish itself was established under Cardinal de Bonald. This happened before Cuire-la-Croix-Rousse merged with Lyon. The church aimed to support the working-class population.

Now, look closer at the architecture of Église Saint-Augustin. Built between 1910 and 1912, it was designed by Augustin Chomel. He sought to blend various styles. He drew inspiration from Sicilian basilicas. These basilicas had plans from Norman Benedictine abbeys. He also incorporated Romanesque elevations and Byzantine decorations. Chomel wanted to build economically. He also wanted to evoke the early Church. Saint Augustine was a key figure in that era.

Notice the facade of Église Saint-Augustin. It features a neo-Romanesque portal. A mosaic adorns the tympanum. Above, a statue of Saint Augustine overlooks the scene. The statue was created by the Lyonnais sculptor Vérot. He worked from a design by Monsieur Cave. The mosaic depicts Christ visiting a canut workshop. Canuts were silk workers. This highlights the church’s connection to the local community.

Inside Église Saint-Augustin, the design continues to impress. The central nave is flanked by aisles. Columns support rounded arches. Light floods in from the side aisles and upper levels. The exposed framework adds to the airy feel. The bell tower at the transept crossing shows Romanesque influences. The architect combined Roman basilicas, Norman Romanesque art, and Byzantine decor.

Consider the materials used to build Église Saint-Augustin. It was built using cinder concrete for economic reasons. The architect emphasized lines and volume. The church’s east end showcases this well.

Pay attention to the fresco in the apse. It depicts Christ with Saint Augustine and his mother, Saint Monica. Philippe Repelin created this artwork. Its gold reflects Byzantine mosaics found in Constantinople and Ravenna.

Église Saint-Augustin also features stained glass windows. These were crafted by Lyonnais master glassmakers Nicod and Jubin. They depict N.D. de Lourdes and Saint Jeanne d’Arc. A painting by Louis Cretey shows Saint Augustine and the child with a seashell. The child uses a shell to empty the sea.

Église Saint-Augustin houses a grand organ built in 1977. Henri Saby created it. His son, Pierre Saby, restored it in 2009.

Today, Église Saint-Augustin stands as a blend of history, art, and faith. Its architecture and art tell the story of Lyon. They also reflect the community it serves. As you leave, remember the layers of history. Remember the artistic choices. These make Église Saint-Augustin a unique treasure in Lyon.
