The year is 1374. King Charles V of France lays the first stone of a new chapel. This chapel, nestled in the heart of the Latin Quarter, would eventually become the Église Rühm Orthodoxe Des Archanges Michel et Gabriel. Of course, it wasn’t always known by that name. Originally called the Chapelle Saint Jean du Collége de Dormans, it was part of the prestigious College de Dormans. This chapel, a beautiful example of Gothic architecture, was designed by the renowned architect Raymond du Temple. It quickly became a beacon of learning and faith, its walls echoing with the voices of scholars and the whispers of prayers. Now fast forward through the centuries. Imagine the tumult of the French Revolution. The college, including the chapel, faced the upheaval of the times. It served as a meeting place for revolutionaries, a town hall, even a military barracks. This period could have easily spelled the end for the Église Rühm Orthodoxe Des Archanges Michel et Gabriel. However, fate had other plans. In 1882, centuries after its construction, the chapel found a new purpose. The Romanian Crown purchased it, recognizing its historical and spiritual significance. The chapel underwent extensive renovations. It was transformed to accommodate the Romanian Orthodox rite, with a neo-Gothic iconostasis that blended seamlessly with the original architecture. Finally, in 1892, the chapel was consecrated as the Église Rühm Orthodoxe Des Archanges Michel et Gabriel, a haven for the Romanian Orthodox community in Paris. Today, the Église Rühm Orthodoxe Des Archanges Michel et Gabriel stands as a testament to resilience and adaptation. It serves as a vibrant symbol of faith and a cultural bridge between Romania and France.
