Église Notre-Dame-du-Mont is a parish church in Marseille. It is affiliated with the Diocese of Marseille. The church stands in the 6th arrondissement. The square it occupies shares its name.
The church’s story began in the 16th century. Before that in the 6th century a church dedicated to St. Etienne stood here. Église Notre-Dame-du-Mont de Rome was later built on the same site. It became known as the Church of the Seafarers. Sailors who survived tragedies at sea came here to pray. This tradition later moved to the Basilica of Notre-Dame de la Garde.
During the French Revolution the church was sold to a private individual. It changed owners several times until 1821. In May 1821 it became property of Marseille again. The city decided to demolish the church because it was too small. They rebuilt a larger one on the same spot. Construction started on April 14 1823. It finished in 1824. Bishop Fortuné de Mazenod consecrated it on February 29 1824.
Frédéric Chopin visited Église Notre-Dame-du-Mont on April 24 1839. A Latin inscription on the church’s pediment commemorates this. Chopin played the organ for the funeral of his friend Adolphe Nourrit a famous singer. The story says Chopin complained about the organ’s poor quality. He advised the pastor to sell it. The pastor agreed and sold the organ to Eyguières. The instrument’s piping was resold due to its poor quality. Later the organ was declared a Historic Monument. Organ builder Pascal Quoirin restored it in 2007.
Église Notre-Dame-du-Mont maintains its musical tradition. Today it hosts classical music sacred songs and other musical performances. It offers a peaceful space for prayer in Marseille.
