Welcome to the \u00c9glise Notre-Dame-des-Victoires. It is a beautiful church that many Parisians do not know. This basilica is located between the Bourse and the Palais-Royal.
Let’s journey back to the 17th century. King Louis XIII vowed to build a church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. He would name it Notre-Dame des Victoires if he won the siege of La Rochelle. This was a conflict against the Huguenots. His victory in 1628 led to the construction of this basilica.
The first stone was laid in 1629. Jean-Fran\u00e7ois de Gondi, the Archbishop of Paris, was present. Construction faced many delays due to lack of funds. Several architects contributed to its design over the years. Pierre Le Muet started the design. Lib\u00e9ral Bruant and Gabriel Le Duc continued the work. Jean-Sylvain Cartaud finally completed the portail in 1740.
The church’s location was once a convent for the Petits-P\u00e8res. These reformed Augustinian religious resided here. They acquired land with Louis XIII’s protection to build their monastery. The monastery included a library with 40.000 books.
During the French Revolution, the church was closed. It became the headquarters of the national lottery. Later, it housed the Bourse des valeurs, or stock exchange. It was not until 1802 that the \u00c9glise Notre-Dame-des-Victoires was returned to worship.
In 1836, Abb\u00e9 Desgenettes dedicated his parish to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. This led to the creation of the Archconfraternity of the Most Holy and Immaculate Heart of Mary. The \u00c9glise Notre-Dame-des-Victoires became a center for Marian prayer.
Look around and notice the many ex-voto offerings on the walls. Over 37,000 plaques and other tokens of gratitude adorn this basilica. Pilgrims from around the world have left these. They thank the Virgin Mary for blessings received. No other church in Paris has such a vast collection of ex-votos.
The basilica also has a cenotaph of Jean-Baptiste Lully. Lully, a musician during Louis XIV’s reign, lived nearby. He wished to be buried here. His tomb was desecrated during the Paris Commune.
Inside the choir, admire the seven grand paintings by Carle Van Loo. One depicts Louis XIII thanking Notre-Dame for the capture of La Rochelle. These paintings are among the most important French religious artworks of the 18th century.
Pope Pius XI designated Notre-Dame-des-Victoires as a minor basilica. This elevated its status within the Catholic Church. Today, it remains a place of pilgrimage and prayer.
