Hidden within the bustling streets of Sèvres, the Église Notre-Dame des Bruyères whispers stories of transformation. Notice its unique trapezoidal shape. This striking design isn’t typical of traditional churches. It intentionally forgoes side chapels, creating a unified space where the congregation gathers in a semi-circle, focused on the altar. The original Église Notre-Dame des Bruyères was a humble chapel built in the 1930s. It served the then-remote Bruyères district. This chapel, constructed from millstones and brick, featured a classic basilical layout with three naves and a bell tower porch. It became a parish in 1962. However, this earlier structure met its end in 1971, making way for the modern church we see today. Look up and let your eyes wander across the two tiers of glass slabs. These slabs, coupled with decorative concrete screens known as claustras, bathe the interior in a soft, diffused light, a stark contrast to the starkness of the concrete structure. The white interior walls attempt to soften the concrete’s austerity. The church’s minimalist choir is adorned with two magnificent mosaics crafted in 1998 by artist Robert Beer. These mosaics add a touch of vibrant color and artistry to the otherwise simple space. The glass slabs themselves are the work of Raymond Fabry and Robert Beer, showcasing their artistic vision. Église Notre-Dame des Bruyères holds a certain mystique, doesn’t it? These glass slabs, a popular addition to churches and civic buildings from the 1960s, possess a robustness that traditional stained glass lacks. Their thick, uneven surfaces diffuse light in a unique way. Nearby, in Meudon, the Église Notre-Dame de la Compassion features similar glass slabs. Yet, the ones here at Notre-Dame des Bruyères stand out. The artist intentionally incorporated recognizable symbols – a sun, a rooster, a dove, a fire. Others remain enigmatic, inviting your own interpretation. As you stand here, imagine the community that gathers within these walls, their voices echoing in this unique space. The Église Notre-Dame des Bruyères is more than just a building. It is a testament to the ever-evolving relationship between faith, architecture, and community.
