Hidden beneath the surface lies the intriguing story of Église Notre-Dame-de-Balmont. This isn’t your typical church. It’s a hidden gem partially buried like ancient crypts. Architect Pierre Genton designed this unique structure in Lyon’s Duchère district in 1964-1965.

Église Notre-Dame-de-Balmont boasts a striking 45-degree slanted pyramidal spire. It’s quite a sight. Sunlight streamed in through clever design illuminating the altar. The sanctuary was triangular. A stone altar piece held the tabernacle. Behind it a curved wall of paving stones formed a modern apse. Étienne Martin sculpted the amazing wooden “organ pipes” on the triangular bell tower.

The Église Notre-Dame-de-Balmont opened on April 19 1964. It served its purpose for almost thirty years. However in 1993 the church was deconsecrated. Its unique design was deemed too modern for some. In 1994 the building found new life. It transformed into the Ciné Duchère an art house cinema. The first movie screening happened on May 8 1996.

The transformation obscured some of the original design. The beautiful light that once shone within the church is now mostly gone. The wooden organ pipes however remain a testament to its past. They are still visible a reminder of the Église Notre-Dame-de-Balmont’s unique history. It’s a place where faith once thrived and now films captivate audiences.

Église Notre-Dame-de-Balmont stands as a fascinating example of architectural ingenuity. It’s a church repurposed and still a focal point for the community. Its unique design stands in Lyon as a reminder of architectural and social change.
