“Destroyed but not defeated” could be the motto of the National Evangelical Church of Beirut. Established in 1848 this church stands as a testament to faith and resilience. It is the oldest Arabic-speaking Protestant congregation in the Middle East.

The National Evangelical Church of Beirut serves as the headquarters for nine other churches. These churches operate under the National Evangelical Union of Lebanon. Think of it as the main hub for a network of faith communities.

American missionaries founded the church. They came from Congregational and Presbyterian backgrounds. Their mission was to spread their message. Beirut proved to be a strategic location.

In 1869 a significant milestone was reached. The first church building was built to house both Arabic and English speakers. For a century this building was a hub of activity. It hosted celebrations for both communities.

Then came the Lebanese Civil War which lasted from 1975 to 1990. The church suffered greatly. It was almost completely destroyed. Only the bell tower remained standing. The congregation scattered.

But hope was not lost. In 1998 the National Evangelical Church of Beirut was rebuilt. It stands once again in the heart of Beirut. It has become a beacon of hope.

Leading the congregation is Rev. Dr. Habib Badr. He serves as the Senior Pastor. His leadership helps the church to thrive.

The National Evangelical Church of Beirut is more than just a place of worship. It is actively involved in the community. The church runs social and educational projects. These projects extend to various parts of Lebanon.

Two elementary schools operate under its guidance. One is in Ras Beirut. The other is in Kafarshima. A high school also functions in Kafarshima.

The church oversees the Schneller School. This is an orphanage and vocational school in Khirbet Qanafar. It provides crucial support to vulnerable children.

In 2002 the church fostered the re-establishment of a special congregation. It is the Anglo-American Community Church. This community welcomes expats and migrant workers. Refugees and English-speaking Lebanese are also part of it.

Even the devastating Beirut explosion on August 4 2020 could not extinguish the church’s spirit. Though badly damaged with stained glass windows blown out the church community persevered.

The National Evangelical Church of Beirut is an inclusive Protestant church. It proclaims the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It strives to serve the city of Beirut through both words and actions. The church operates independently with important decisions made locally. It exemplifies faith service and community.
