Whispers of Elijah echo here. This is Église Mar Elias in Beirut.

Legend speaks of the prophet Elijah residing in a cave beneath this very spot centuries ago. The Église Mar Elias stands as a testament to this enduring belief. It’s a place of pilgrimage. A place where faith intertwines with history.

The neighborhood of Mar Elias Btina took its name from the church and convent. They’re significant sites. They draw many people from far and wide. The church itself isn’t just ancient history though. It’s also a symbol of coexistence. The sounds of church bells and muezzin calls blend here. They don’t clash. This peaceful harmony reflects Gibran Khalil Gibran’s words: When you pray you rise to meet others in the air. Those praying at the same time. Those you might never otherwise meet.

The church’s history is rich. It’s a complex tapestry. A convent and church dedicated to Saint Elias stood here before. They were built in the late 18th century after a division within the Beirut Melchite community. The current three-nave cathedral replaced a previous structure that had become unsafe. It was reconstructed between 1847 and 1849 under Bishop Agapios Riachi. The structure followed the Byzantine style. The interior is a fascinating blend of Baroque and Islamic elements.

The Église Mar Elias has seen its share of challenges. It suffered severe damage during the Lebanese Civil War. It has since undergone complete restoration. This restoration not only repaired the damage but also revealed surprises. Work uncovered a colonnaded courtyard. It’s reminiscent of a Roman public building. The restoration also added a bell tower and reception hall replacing the bishop’s former living quarters.

The church’s location is central to its importance. It’s close to a bustling roundabout. That roundabout is a meeting point for job seekers. Nearby is also a Palestinian camp. It’s home to over 600 people. Many are Christians. Others are Syrian workers Sudanese people and Sri Lankans. Sadly social hardship is also present.

The Église Mar Elias stands tall. It’s a powerful symbol. It’s a symbol of resilience faith and peaceful coexistence in the heart of Beirut. It’s a place where the past present and future intertwine. A place to remember and reflect. A place worth visiting.
