“A sanctuary for refugees?” whispered a woman to her companion, glancing curiously at the Église espagnole du Coeur Immaculé de Marie. Standing before this grand church, it’s hard to imagine its humble beginnings. Originally a modest chapel belonging to the Carmes Déchaussés order, the Église espagnole du Coeur Immaculé de Marie has borne witness to the shifting tides of history. In the wake of the tumultuous French Revolution, the Carmes Déchaussés were forced to relinquish their chapel on rue de la Pompe. It wasn’t until 1913, amidst a wave of Spanish refugees seeking solace in Paris, that the church found its new purpose. King Alfonso XIII of Spain, recognizing the plight of his displaced countrymen, made a momentous decision. He secured the church and its adjoining buildings, placing them in the care of the Claretian Missionaries, to serve as a spiritual and cultural haven. On October 15, 1914, the church’s bells tolled, marking the first mass celebrated for the Spanish community. But its role extended far beyond religious services. The Claretian Missionaries went above and beyond to provide solace and support, assisting refugees in finding work and even organizing leisure activities. The church became a beacon of hope in a foreign land, a testament to the enduring power of faith and community in the face of adversity.
