In 1915, amidst the turmoil of World War I, a solemn vow echoed through Lyon. The Association of War Widows pledged to erect a magnificent church dedicated to the Sacred Heart if France emerged victorious. This vow, reminiscent of the one that birthed the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière, laid the foundation for the Église du Sacré-Cœur. Their prayers were answered. In 1922, the first stone was laid on a sprawling 15,000 square meter plot. Architect Paulet envisioned a grand edifice, drawing inspiration from the Sacré-Cœur Basilica in Montmartre. The Église du Sacré-Cœur, if completed, would have dwarfed all other churches in Lyon, save for the Saint-Jean Cathedral. Imagine a colossal structure, 94 meters long and 24 meters wide, with three naves, a transept spanning 45 meters, and a dome soaring 63 meters into the sky. Sadly, financial constraints forced compromises from the outset. The envisioned dressed stone was replaced with the distinctive white reconstituted stone from the Boschetto company in Aix-les-Bains. The transept was blessed in 1934, but the project stalled, a victim of dwindling funds. The Église du Sacré-Cœur remained unfinished. In 1969, the dream was abandoned. Two-thirds of the land intended for the nave became a public garden. The Église du Sacré-Cœur stands today as a poignant testament to a vision unfulfilled. Its romano-byzantine style, popular in the interwar period, is evident in the striking façade with its central rose window and antique-style portico. Inside, the church’s grandeur is palpable despite its incompleteness. Soaring pillars support the ribbed vaults, creating a sense of awe. A smaller, intimate chapel now hosts ceremonies, a quiet counterpoint to the vast, silent expanse where the grand nave was meant to be. The Église du Sacré-Cœur is a story of hope, resilience, and adaptation. It is a reminder that even incomplete dreams can leave a lasting mark.
