Beneath the dome’s majestic curve lies a story of faith. It’s a story etched in stone at the Église de l’Immaculée-Conception. This church stands as a testament to architectural ambition. Let’s delve into the history of this remarkable building.

The Église de l’Immaculée-Conception’s story begins in 1855. The city of Lyon gifted land to the diocese. This was after Pope Pius IX proclaimed the dogma of the Immaculate Conception. The Église de l’Immaculée-Conception would honor this.

Pierre Bossan designed the Église de l’Immaculée-Conception. He is renowned for his plans for Notre-Dame de Fourvière. Construction unfolded in two phases because of funding challenges. The nave rose between 1856 and 1859. Later, from 1889 to 1893, the choir and chapels were added. The Second Empire initially financed it. The Third Republic proved less willing to fund religious buildings. Wealthy parishioners stepped in to ensure its completion.

Bossan also designed the presbytery next to the Église de l’Immaculée-Conception. William Léo assisted him during the construction. Charles-Marie Franchet created the interior decoration and facade.

The total cost reached nearly 700,000 francs. Lucien Bégule crafted the twelve stained-glass window sets. Each set features three stunning windows.

By 1874 the Église de l’Immaculée-Conception parish was the diocese’s most populous. It had 27,000 residents. This led to the creation of the Saint-Sacrement parish to the southeast.

The Église de l’Immaculée-Conception’s exterior has a fortified appearance. Bossan drew inspiration from his travels in Sicily and Persia. The dome reflects orientalist architectural trends. Bossan only used domes in two other basilicas. Those are in Ars and Lalouvesc. The church’s Latin cross plan later influenced the Basilica of Ars. The Église de l’Immaculée-Conception features broken arches. These are reminiscent of Middle Eastern mosques.

Inside, slender columns support the vaults. This was achieved using a unique weight distribution technique. This innovation was later used at Fourvière.

The stained-glass windows underwent restoration in 2007. The city of Lyon funded the 260,000 euro project. The Église de l’Immaculée-Conception covers approximately 800 square meters.

Step inside the Église de l’Immaculée-Conception. Admire the statues and stained glass. Note the art deco dome. It’s an unusual feature for churches. Consider the dedication of those who built and funded this house of worship. The Église de l’Immaculée-Conception is a testament to faith. It reflects architectural innovation and community support.
