Domes were all the rage. We are standing before the \u00c9glise de l’Immacul\u00e9e Conception. This church is a testament to Lyon’s rich history. It also showcases its architectural evolution.
The \u00c9glise de l’Immacul\u00e9e Conception is located in Lyon’s 3rd arrondissement. Its construction spanned from 1856 to 1893. The church represents Neo-Byzantine style. Pierre Bossan was the architect behind this masterpiece. He is also known for designing Notre-Dame de Fourvi\u00e8re.
Following the proclamation of the Immaculate Conception dogma by Pope Pius IX, Lyon gifted land to the diocese in 1855. This was for the construction of a church dedicated to this dogma.
Construction of the \u00c9glise de l’Immacul\u00e9e Conception was split into two phases due to funding issues. The nave was built between 1856 and 1859. Later, from 1889 to 1893, the chancel and chapels were added. The Second Empire initially funded the project. The Third Republic was less keen to finance religious buildings. Wealthy parishioners stepped in to complete the \u00c9glise de l’Immacul\u00e9e Conception.
Bossan also designed the presbytery next to the \u00c9glise de l’Immacul\u00e9e Conception. William L\u00e9o assisted Bossan on the project. Charles-Marie Franchet another of Bossan’s students handled the interior decoration and facade.
The entire project cost around 700,000 francs. Lucien B\u00e9gule created the twelve stained glass window sets. Each set includes three windows.
In 1874, the parish of the \u00c9glise de l’Immacul\u00e9e Conception was the diocese’s most populous. It had 27,000 residents. This led to the creation of a new parish to the southeast called Saint-Sacrement.
Like other religious buildings by Bossan, the \u00c9glise de l’Immacul\u00e9e Conception has a fortified exterior. Bossan drew inspiration from his travels to Sicily and Persia.
A key feature is its dome. It was a popular form among orientalist architects. Bossan used it sparingly. He only used it in the basilicas of Ars and Lalouvesc. The church’s layout is a Latin cross. It is centered on an octagonal dome. It also features side chapels and an ambulatory. This design influenced the basilica of Ars. The pointed horseshoe arch is another orientalist element. It is reminiscent of mosques in the Near East.
The vaults’ weight is supported by slender columns. This was achieved using a discharging vault technique. This innovative technique was later used at Fourvi\u00e8re.
The \u00c9glise de l’Immacul\u00e9e Conception spans about 800 square meters. Its stained glass windows have undergone restoration work. The city of Lyon funded this work.
