Hidden in plain sight, the Église de l’Annonciation stands as a testament to Lyon’s resilience. This modern marvel, completed in 1957, replaced a neo-Gothic predecessor lost to the ravages of World War II. The Église de l’Annonciation, dedicated to the Annunciation, echoes this pivotal moment in biblical history. The very name, “Annonciation,” evokes the angel Gabriel’s message to Mary. Architect Paul Erasme Koch designed this striking structure. He chose a basilica plan. The church features a nave flanked by two aisles. A lowered vault covers it. The flat apse adds to its unique profile. A defining feature of the Église de l’Annonciation is its towering campanile. This sleek, white concrete structure reaches 62 meters into the sky. It’s clad in golden stones from the Lyon region. Atop this impressive tower sits a mesmerizing work of art. A light blue, wrought-iron structure, flanked by 18 gilded angels, created by Jacques Bouget from a design by Étienne Martin and François Stahly. Known as “La Ronde des Anges,” this celestial circle is crowned by an 11-meter cross. The main entrance to the Église de l’Annonciation is on the north side. Light filters into the space through vertical windows in the side aisles, while a circular window in the west gable wall illuminates the central nave. Inside, the church holds more treasures. A copper and brass crucifix by Philippe Kaeppelin graces the main altar. Mosaics by Jean Bertholle adorn the weekday chapel and crypt. Look closely at the windows. You’ll see the work of Maurice Rocher, produced by the Jean Barillet workshop, at the back of the church, and Jacques Michel’s artistry in the baptistery. The Église de l’Annonciation, with its blend of modern architecture and symbolic artistry, is a must-see in Lyon. It stands as a symbol of hope and rebirth from the ashes of war.
