Gazing upon the Église de La Trinité-La Palud, can you sense the echoes of its past? This church whispers tales of redemption, revolution, and renewal. Église de La Trinité-La Palud stands on a plot of land once occupied by the Trinitarian Convent. The Trinitarians, founded in the late 12th century, were dedicated to ransoming Christian captives from Muslim captors. Their presence in Marseille dates back to 1202, originally settling near Porte Galle. They later moved to the area now known as La Palud, a name connected to a fascinating local figure, Madeleine Demandolx de La Palud. The original convent and church were sold and demolished during the French Revolution. The current Église de La Trinité-La Palud, consecrated in 1829, arose from these ruins, thanks to the efforts of Champion de Cicé, the Archbishop of Aix-en-Provence, acting as Bishop of Marseille. He purchased the land in 1806. Due to insufficient funds, the Marseille city council stepped in to cover the remaining costs. The church’s interior is a testament to the city’s dedication to its spiritual heritage. The main altar, designed by Henri Révoil, dominates the choir. A painting of the Holy Trinity by Jean-Baptiste Arnaud-Durbec adorns the apse, flanked by statues of the Sacred Heart and Saint Peter. The intricate wooden stalls feature carved pelicans, symbolizing Christ’s sacrifice. Statues of various saints adorn the pillars, each a silent sentinel of faith. The baptistery, with its semi-circular vaulted ceiling, houses stunning paintings by Dominique Magaud and his sister Marie. These works depict the baptism of Christ and Saint Michael. The chapel dedicated to Saint Serenus, the tenth bishop of Marseille, stands as a reminder of his zealous fight against idolatry. The chapel also commemorates the return of Saint Serenus’ relics to Marseille in 1840.
