He learned about the plight of the small Armenian community in Paris. They lacked their own dedicated place of worship. Mantachiants, deeply religious and a fervent patriot, felt compelled to act. Right here, before you, stands the magnificent Église Arménienne Saint-Grégoire l’Illuminateur. This Armenian Apostolic church is a testament to his dedication. The construction of the Église Arménienne Saint-Grégoire l’Illuminateur began in 1902, funded entirely by Mantachiants. He secured a prime location near the prestigious Champs-Élysées, paying a staggering 450,000 French francs. The design, entrusted to the young architect Albert Désiré Guilbert, reflects a modern interpretation of traditional Armenian architecture. Completed in 1904, the Église Arménienne Saint-Grégoire l’Illuminateur served as a beacon for the burgeoning Armenian community in Paris. This community, now one of the largest in the world, still finds solace and unity within these hallowed halls.
