Did Edwin Rahardjo ever imagine his humble garage would transform into a cornerstone of Indonesian contemporary art? Edwin’s Gallery, born from this repurposed space in 1984, stands as a testament to Rahardjo’s enduring passion. Edwin’s Gallery isn’t just a building. It’s a living story, a testament to Indonesia’s vibrant art scene. Rahardjo, also the Chairman of the Indonesian Art Gallery Association (AGSI), envisioned a space where artists and art lovers could connect. Edwin’s Gallery has realized that vision, becoming a hub for contemporary art discourse in Indonesia and beyond. The gallery sprawls across a 2000 square meter plot. The main building, reminiscent of a traditional Joglo house, is a two-story exhibition space. A separate building houses Edwin’s personal space, also serving as a guest area. Here, he keeps a collection of kinetic art, including some of his own creations. Edwin’s Gallery has showcased the work of hundreds of Indonesian artists in over 150 exhibitions. These exhibitions feature both established and emerging artists. Names like Sunaryo, Nyoman Nuarta, Heri Dono, and Dolorosa Sinaga grace the gallery’s history, alongside rising talents like Hojatul, M. Irfan, Ayu Arista Murti, and Gusmen Heriadi. Edwin’s Gallery has also brought international artists to Indonesia. One notable exhibition featured contemporary Chinese artists at the Indonesian National Gallery, curated by Johnson Chang. Edwin’s Gallery is not limited to contemporary art. It has also hosted exhibitions showcasing historical Indonesian art, featuring masters like Ahmad Sadali, Mochtar Apin, S. Sudjojono, and Affandi. This reflects Rahardjo’s commitment to both the past and the future of Indonesian art. Edwin’s Gallery is more than just a gallery. It is a passion project, a testament to the power of art and a vibrant hub for Indonesia’s creative spirit.
