What if I told you that this school, Edna Karr Senior High School, has a spirit that even a hurricane couldn’t break? Opened in 1964 as a junior high, Edna Karr Senior High School quickly became a pillar of the Algiers community. Named after a beloved local educator, it embodied the community’s commitment to quality education. Then, in 1965, Hurricane Betsy struck. The storm ravaged the school, even destroying the beautiful new gym floor. But the community rallied, the floor was replaced, and Edna Karr Senior High School continued to thrive. It transitioned into a high school in 1990, driven by the community’s desire for a strong college prep program. This dedication paid off. Edna Karr Senior High School achieved the National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence recognition, not once, but twice. Even Hurricane Katrina in 2005 couldn’t extinguish its spirit. Edna Karr Senior High School was one of the first schools to reopen, becoming a beacon of hope in the storm’s aftermath. Today, Edna Karr Senior High School is not just a school but a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. It embodies the belief in the power of education and community, proving that even in the face of adversity, some things are truly “Second to None.”
