“Towards Far Horizons” is not just a motto. It’s the driving force behind Sir Edmund Hillary Collegiate. This school stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of one of New Zealand’s most celebrated heroes.

Sir Edmund Hillary Collegiate, right here in Otara, Auckland, is more than just a place of learning. It’s a community. Opened by Sir Edmund Hillary himself in 2004, the school embodies his values of excellence, respect, and perseverance.

But let’s rewind a bit. Before 2004, this campus was home to three separate schools: Hillary College, Bairds Intermediate, and Clydemore Primary. In a visionary move, they joined forces to create Sir Edmund Hillary Collegiate. This merger created a unique educational pathway for students from year 0 to year 13.

Imagine the convenience for families. Large families find it easier to transport their tamariki to school within the different age groups. All are on the same campus. This collegiate structure fosters a sense of unity and shared purpose.

Sir Edmund Hillary Collegiate faced challenges. In 2009, the board of trustees was sacked following an Education Review Office report. Claims of teacher misconduct rocked the community. A new board was elected, and the school began its journey toward positive change.

The school is divided into three levels: junior, middle, and senior. Each has its own principal. Yet, they all work together under a single board of trustees.

What’s truly special about Sir Edmund Hillary Collegiate is its commitment to its diverse student body. The school is enriched by a vibrant mix of cultures. Samoan, Tongan, and Maori students make up a significant portion of the school population. The school actively works to promote Maori language, identity, and culture. A bilingual unit in the Junior School supports the learning of te reo and tikanga Maori.

But Sir Edmund Hillary Collegiate is not just about academics and cultural preservation. It is about instilling values. The school’s values system guides students throughout their educational journey. Excellence means having high expectations. Whanaungatanga means working together for the common good. Respect means respecting learners, teachers, and ourselves.

Sir Edmund Hillary Collegiate encourages its students to embody the spirit of its namesake. The school wants its students to adapt to tough situations and become stronger. “It is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves,” Hillary once said.

Sir Edmund Hillary Collegiate strives to create global lifelong achievers. The school provides a seamless values system. This seamless values system lasts from year 1 to 13.

Sir Edmund Hillary Collegiate remains a beacon of hope and opportunity in Otara. It is a place where students are nurtured, inspired, and empowered to reach their full potential. The spirit of Sir Edmund Hillary lives on in the halls of this remarkable school.
