In 1859, a small group of believers gathered in a rented room on the bustling Broadway. They dreamt of a place to call their own, a beacon of faith in the growing community of Edmonton. This was the humble beginning of the Edmonton Baptist Church. The church we see today wasn’t always here. The original chapel, built in 1861, stood on Broadway. The church thrived, becoming a pillar of the community. By the 1920s, the congregation had outgrown the chapel. They purchased land at the corner of Hertford and Monmouth Roads, adding a Sunday school and a hall. These bustling spaces hosted not just religious services, but also youth groups, Boy’s Brigade, Girl Guides, and even a Scout troop. The Edmonton Baptist Church was more than a place of worship; it was the heart of the community. But Edmonton was changing. The urban landscape was being reshaped, and by the 1970s, the church found itself in the path of redevelopment – Edmonton Green was being born. This transformation brought with it the need for a new church, a modern space to reflect the changing times. And so, in 1976, the current Edmonton Baptist Church opened its doors. Standing as a testament to both the enduring faith and the ever-evolving story of Edmonton, the church continues to welcome those seeking spiritual guidance and community.
