Can you see it? The Edmonstone House Stable Block Ruin. Its weathered stones tell stories of a bygone era. The Edmonstone family, a cadet branch of the House of Seton, owned the vast estate surrounding these ruins. They built a castle, which later gave way to a grand mansion. The house was rebuilt twice after fires, once around 1800 and again in 1830. But its history was not without conflict. The Edmonstones and their neighbours, the Wauchopes of Niddrie, engaged in a lengthy feud. Their disputes, seemingly rooted in land ownership, spanned generations. The Edmonstone house survived several fires but eventually met its demise in the 1950s. Its ruins are a reminder of the changing landscape of Edinburgh. If you look closely at the remaining walls, imagine you see the ghostly figure of a man, possibly a victim of the feuds between the two families. His leather boots may have crumbled to dust, but his silence whispers of a turbulent past. Standing in the shadow of the Edmonstone House Stable Block Ruin, the centuries of history around you come alive.
